Another good "founding" document was The Fundamental Orders (of
Connecticut) in 1639.

http://www.constitution.org/bcp/fo_1639.htm

It was written shortly after a sermon by the Reverend Thomas Hooker (my
12thggf), in which he put forth the proposition "The foundation of
authority is laid in the free consent of the people,". He closed with "As
God has given us liberty let us take it."

It is considered the first Constitution in the "Western Tradition". And it
is why Connecticut is known as "The Constitution State".
