Bush Sr. Promised the Panamanians that if they staged a coup, and take down
Noriega on their own terms, we would back them up. On October 10, 1989,
they did that. Several of his officers staged a coup and had them in their
custody for most of the day at La Comandancia (Main Panamanian Defense Force
HQ on Ancon Hill)...Our Battalion aid station and ALOC were located just
outside of the site, so we had a really good view of what was going on
inside. We were given orders to stand down and not assist. Later that
afternoon/early evening, Noriega's Batalion 2000 (his SF unit) stormed the
Comandancia and freed him. We got to see the officers that stage the coup
get executed. This was still Operation Nimrod Dancer and it was about a
month before the rangers joined us to prepare for Just Cause.

I agree about Iraq, but what was the Panama stuff? General interest, I
always heard we handled Just Cause pretty well, many of my NCOs jumped in.
