iPhone and iPads are nice, especially if you have never had a tablet/smart
phone. They are good starter items.

That said, I just switched to the Galaxy SIII. I could not stand the
proprietary nature of Apple any longer. Some people need their hands held
when they do things. Others do not. Apple treats everyone like the
former. If you are tech head, you can try a decent android tablet for
$100.00. It won't be a gaming platform, but will stream videos, play some
games, and work well for organizational apps. A cheap investment to try
that side of the equation.

Whatever you get, I have to second the recommendation for syncing with
google calendar. If you desire, you can setup the whole tablet/phone in an
exchange format with you gmail, giving you contacts, calendar, and mail all
synced with you gmail, calendar, and contacts.

As for organizational apps, there are 1000's of them. I usually just send
myself and email.
