I don't admin my own server, but I can't imagine a life without my 500 
MB IMAP maildir anymore :)

Server: Courier, WU-imapd
Client: Mozilla (IMHO the best, but do use the 1.1 Alpha or else you 
have to edit prefs.js manually) or Outlook (but only if you promise to 
patch it *every* *day*)

Not needed for this setup. You just POP the acoount at the ISP, then the 
mail comes in your Inbox and you drag 'n drop it in the local server. 
Not automatic, but your current setup requires some work as well :)
Don't forget to ask your ISP for the possibilities of bSMTP. Many ISP's 
here offer it for free.
