Thing is the world will not let that happen. The US is so interconnected now that it cannot be isolationist. You like your smart phone or laptop. Aside from the components being assembled at FoxConn in China, the rare earths needed also come from there. The US imports a significant amount of its energy needs from abroad, a lot of its raw material requirements as well. Don't you think that its in the nation's bests interests to protect those sources one way or another?
BTW another thing to cut or change - because of a Republican sponsored bill several years, the government is required to sell its helium reserves at a fraction of the market rate. also how about letting Medicare negotiate drug prices instead of paying what big pharma dictates.
