You need to fund the military industrial complex, and that is why you needed the F35. How many persons does the defence industry employ, and what would be the fallout if those companies had to go back to "normal" levels of contracts and revenue?
But no, I don't think the US needs to outspend the entire world in defense spending in order to protect itself and it's interests.
