I have to agree Phil. Having guns on airplanes seems somewhat foolhardy :)

Far better to prevent said loony from getting on the plane in the first
place, or failing that, into the cockpit.

All I have to say on this is that someone hasn't thought this through...

What happens if a loony comes into the cockpit and threatens the pilots,
the pilot pulls out the gun, the loony continues to advance... BANG...
The bullet misses the loony and punctures the cockpit, the plane
decompresses causing the plane to crash...

They kill a whole plane full of people rather than being taken to
another country

INSANE!
