Sorry- at age 18 in the U.S. you have to register with the Selective Service, get a draft card.
They had status codes on the card. Prime "draft meat" was 1A. College student deferment was 2S - reverts to 1A when you leave school. There were also hardship deferments, conscientious objector, etc. If there was a medical reason they didn't want your sorry bod, you got 4F - "medically excused". (Guess what - I didn't want them either!!) Beat the heck out of getting sent to the jungles. I ummm took a break from college. They were having a draft lottery. Your birthday got assigned a number from 1 to 365. Number 1 was first group to get drafted. I had number 30. During the period I didn't have a student exemption, had it not been for the 4F, weeeeelllllll... -Ben > hey ben....whats a 4F medical? > > w > > -----Original Message----- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: 11 July 2002 16:26 > To: CF-Community > Subject: RE: a bit of culture in the morning!! > > > Yup - 12/27/1949 > hey, I said I was an old fart! > :-) > > Yeah, I was getting out of high school in SF in '67 - > the Haight-Ashbury "Summer of Love". > > Got to go to the original Fillmore, Carousel Ballroom, > Family Dog's Avalon Ballroom, Winterland.
