thanks Ben. Lucky that I never had to go through any of that. Last
conscription in this country got my dad though, just after the war.
Character building he said, then told me how much time he spent getting
drunk and getting into trouble.

at age 18 in the U.S. you have to register with the
Selective Service, get a draft card.

They had status codes on the card.

Prime "draft meat" was 1A.

College student deferment was 2S - reverts to 1A when
you leave school.

There were also hardship deferments, conscientious
objector, etc.

If there was a medical reason they didn't want your
sorry bod, you got 4F - "medically excused".
(Guess what - I didn't want them either!!)

Beat the heck out of getting sent to the jungles.

I ummm took a break from college. They were having a
draft lottery. Your birthday got assigned a number from
1 to 365. Number 1 was first group to get drafted. I had
number 30. During the period I didn't have a student
exemption, had it not been for the 4F, weeeeelllllll...
