I asked my sister and she said that he can still sit in the cockpit, but
only if the plane belongs to his own airline and he can prove he is who he
says he is.

If he's on a plane from another airline, he has to sit as close to the back
of the plane as possible. This is a result of 9/11.

She said each airline has their own rules, but she thinks all have adopted a
policy of no pilots from other airlines in the cockpit and some might not
even let their own pilots in there now.

She says the seats are mostly there for flight instructors and other
observers, but pilots were allowed as a courtesy. It was a good way for a
pilot to get unnoficial and informal cockpit time in planes they weren't yet
rated on .. especially the Jr. pilots, which are the ones doing the majority
of the jump seating. I guess this is why some airlines still let their own
pilots jump seat in the cockpit.
