no 'pologies! actually you're more right than wrong we don't do guilt in the sense you and the film were referring to.
BTW another bit of knowledge - the eve of Yom Kippur is called "Kol Nidre" which means "All Vows". Back in the time of the Spanish Inquisition, many Jews were faced with choosing between torture/death and converting to Catholicism. We have a tradition where you don't feel guilty for not fulfilling vows made under duress. We even have an "out" if you have made a good-faith effort to fulfill a vow and can't. -Ben > Thanks for the clarification, I'll remember that. > (That's what I get for quoting stoopid pop culture references ;-) > > -----Original Message----- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Tuesday, September 03, 2002 6:49 PM > To: CF-Community > Subject: RE: The Voluntary Human Extinction Movement > > Kevin, > > you said: > > <snip> > > Reminds me of that flick Keeping the Faith where Ben Stiller's rabbi > > character says to his priest buddy, "I'm a Jew, we don't do the guilt > > thing." > > Actually, we do (guilt) - but differently. > > Catholics confess individually, privately, specifically to > errors of omission or comission. > > On Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement), Jews confess collectively, > publically, and generically.
