A friend of mine works at a species survival center and zoo in Louisiana.
Specifically, she works with the birds. This summer, when West Nile Virus
became an issue, she was forced to watch almost their entire chick flock die
really excruciating deaths because:
a. The boss refused to believe it was West Nile
b. When the boss finally admitted it was West Nile, he refused to authorize
the vaccine for the uninfected ones because "it costs too much."
c. He wouldn't pay for euthanizing the sick ones because "it costs too
much."

My friend had to go over his head to his boss to finally get permission to
euthanize the sick birds. (Apparently, natural death from west nile is truly
horrific.)

Now, remember, this is a conservation place. Their sole purpose is to
increase the world's supply of several species. But, it wasn't worth the
money to bother to vaccinate. Hmmmm.... Nope. Nothing wrong with our zoo
system. (By the way, the same thing happened with the flamingos at the
affiliated zoo.)
