Like Germany, Japan, Korea, and what now looks like Bosnia and Kosovo.

Just ended it 150 years ago. Also look at football games etc. The NASCAR
races are very similar in structure to the chariot races that were held in
the Hippodrome in Constantinople until 900 AD or so. And the games were not
for the upper classes, rather for the proletariat. Just like TV. And given
what's been on television and the movies, is there much difference between
watching gladiators fight and the WWF?

At the time that was science. Remember though the Romans closely followed a
rationalistic philosophy (Stocisim) throughout their history, until
Christianity too over around 320 AD. The legal codices relied less on
religion than rational thought.

Besides consider such things as the Psychic Friends Network, Jerry Falwell,
Pat Robertson, creationism etc. Now tell me that we are not very similar to
the ancient romans?

The 2004 election is a good contrast. Also most of the election in the
Roman republic were peaceful. It wasn't until the end of the republic that
violence was used.

As for the leaders being elected, not by monarchy, agreed, but that is
because we are more of a plutocracy (rule by the rich elite) than the
romans were.
