Of course, PCs have been doing that since then, too.

PCs had hardcoded memory segments for different types of graphics displays.

IIRC
VGA (EGA, PGA) all started at A0000
MGA (Monochrome) started at B6000

So you could have a monochrome screen and a high res color screen in the same PC. 
Worked great for Autocad and such.

Had to write a little bit of display driver code, but nothing difficult.

Heh, been doing this on Macs since '86 or so. The old Mac's still do it
better than XP does. ;)
