There are reports of river catfish in Texas (yes, Texas) that weighed well over 1000 lbs. This was during the "Hide and Tallow" days of the old west (1860s-1870s), when beef was killed just for the fat and hide. All of the meat was dumped in nearby rivers, where the catfish lived.
