Rechargeable batteries

I just treated myself to MS's new wireless desktop elite(GO GET ONE).

It seems to be so-so on battery consumption; the energizers that came in the box are already getting flaky on my mouse after a week, but then I do spend a TON of time using this stuff.  Not too bad, i can still develop and type and all without trouble, but for games and such I need it to be 90%+.

So I figure I'll invest in a good set of rechargables and a charger.  I use my computer enough here that it is worth the while, and I am planning on getting another to take to work since I like the feel and look of the set up so much.

I know nicads and lith ion are options, any others out there?  Gel cells(not YOU Gel), I thought I had read something about them on /., but they might have been a type of lith ion.  I know lith ions are a bit more, but I'm willing to spend the extra up front and get the good stuff now.

Also, I want a high capacity charger so I can have a few sets of each size trickle charging all the time so they are peaked and ready as I need them.  What features should I look for?  What type is the best for keeping your batteries strong for each charge and also keeps them alive the longest?  What kind of money am I looking at here?

Also, I know that the nicads used in rc cars charged better if you put a load on them to drain completely before charging so as not to create a memory and get a false peak during charging.  Is this a concern for the batteries available today?  What should I use to drain?  I could just get a few small light bulbs from radio shack and jury rig a drianer, but I'm willing to but a "real" set up if they are out there.  Do any of the chargers have a drain option to do it for you before charging?

I need two AA for the board and 2 AAA for the mouse.  I'd really like something that will fit all sizes so I can just get a set as new devices require...

Thanks, guys!
