I wanted to pipe in on a few things here. Some of you may remember a discussion, like this one, from last year (my original post is also on my blog somewhere.) That being said, you may already know how I feel about this topic. However, first I would like to comment on the post that started this thread, the job at Verian Technologies.
I interviewed, and was accepted for, this position, several months ago. Due to a number of personal reasons I had to turn the position down. That being said, I keep communication open with the team at Verian. My impressions, from the many different phone calls and meetings I had with several different people in their organization, is that they are a highly cohesive team, with great focus, and an outstanding product. They have been using CF since version 1, and continue to build upon each new advancement. They place a good deal of emphasis on team building, and foster an environment of professional growth. Should my circumstances ever change, I would be proud to work for the Verian team. I do not have a degree. I took several semesters, from UMUC, of focused OOP classes just before life got in the way (new job, baby, etc). But I do have an extensive background in IT, with emphasis on programming and seven years in CF, so I don't feel threatened when a job listing says a 'degree is required.' I let my experience speak for itself, and it knows the language pretty well. (For the record, I will go back to finish my degree. There is always more to learn, and I never stop.) My last comment is to Aaron, who maybe didn't realize (or care) that others were watching. A great deal of my 'start' in programming began with the 9+ years I spent in the US Army. I would hire one good veteran, with little formal education, over a dozen snot nosed grads with no discipline. And I would have a far more productive team from doing so, in my experience. You might not have meant to come off insulting, but you insulted me.
