This is getting to be very off-topic for CF_Jobs, but here goes, anyway:

But don't kid yourself that AOL (or the commercialization/idiot-proofing of the web
that it represents)
is going to be anything other than the standard that we all have to deal with from
here on out. The net is here to stay, of course. It will morph into something else, as
we're seeing
already with networks of picture frames (Storybox), etc.

It will always change, and when those changes trickle down to the masses, they'll be
presented in a way that makes them usable right away, by the majority, without much of
a learning
curve. I've never used AOL and maybe never will, but heck, they're the big gorilla
that I should have invested in years ago, cuz they appeal to the masses.

I think the net will always retain it's independent nature though, to some extent. I
don't think you'll see the end of the personal homepage. Big corps have already taken
over
everything that can make money, including ISPs that host personal homepages (hmm, so,
how personal are they, anyway)?

As developers we need to keep our skills current, so that we can ride the wave instead
of getting swallowed by it. That's true whether we're talking about having to develop
something
for access by AOL users, pda users, phone users, whatever. We may not always *like*
the method of access, but as developers, that decision isn't up to us. We'll be doing
ourselves a
favor (job-wise) if we do what we can to keep our skills current.
