After developing with both CF (3.5 years) and ASP (1.5 years), I'm not
sure I agree with the 40% faster statistic, especially at the $60K/yr
developer level. IMHO, CF is faster only for someone coming from an HTML
background, with little or no "real" programming experience. For the more
advanced developer, perhaps coming from a VB background (there's a lot of
'em, though I'm not one), I really doubt if there's much difference in
coding time, once familiarity with the tool is attained. The "more lines
of code in ASP" argument doesn't make sense to me, either, since most of
the object-creation stuff is boilerplate and just pasted in from a
personal code library by an experienced coder.
The two most important points of comparison between CF and ASP for me are:
1) CF abstracts the code to a higher level, hiding levels of complexity
that basic applications rarely need to adjust. This is good up to a point,
but when you cross over into advanced, or "unusual" applications,
sometimes it's nice to have the lower-level code access of ASP. In
particular, integrating COM objects into n-tier applications just seems go
more smoothly in ASP.
2) The cost of CF is neglible for in-house development, as you've pointed
out. Even if CF took 40% LONGER to develop in, its cost shouldn't be a
factor for intranets, proprietary business applications, etc., because
relative to the costs of salaries, CF's cost is negligible. But when you
start thinking about SELLING an application to the rest of the world, the
ubiquity and freeness of ASP becomes critical. I'm speaking from a very
biased viewpoint, since our customer base consists of around 1,600 small
to medium ISPs, but if we were to try to sell them an application based on
CF, perhaps 2% would buy it. ALL of them can run ASP, and even the ones
who already have CF are willing to buy ASP apps.
My $0.02, flame away... :)
