Agreed,

I'm not trying to be argumentative in this thread at all, it's just
frustrating when your development platform of choice and your operating
system of choice do not support one another.

I'm just going to have to break down and buy VirtualPC and port it
myself.

Hear, Hear!

That is the correct approach. I would not have much faith in a
company, or its products, if they frivolously dissipated their assets.
Macromedia's greatest responsibility is to stay in business, and to do
that they must make a profit.

My hope is that Macromedia will periodically review the OS X market
potential for CFMX and associated products, with a sound, business
approach. And, when the business case can be made, that they release a
CFMX product for Mac OS X.

As much as I want CFMX for Mac OS X, it will do me no good if
Macromedia goes out of business releasing it.

I do think that opening up CFMX to Mac developers, will drive some
sales of CFMX Server software on other platforms. For over 5 years, I
have been developing CF software on nothing but a Mac. These
installations are deployed on other platforms.

With the port of the Developer version to OS X, I (and many others) can
now develop much more efficiently-- this should increase our deployment
on other platforms.

I hope that the port creates enough interest that people will see the
advantages of a CF-Mac product. Then they will communicate this to
Macromedia (who does listen), as input for building a business case.

Hmm.. according to Jesse's comments, maybe giving the same feedback to
Apple would help the process.

The port would have not been possible without the help and guidance of
Jesse, Sean Corfield, Christian Cantrell, Tom Dyson, and other people
within Macromedia, and those on the outside.

The contacts I have had with Macromedia people, are exemplified by the
honest, considered, sober, professional and very business-like approach
used by Jesse and Sean in their participation in the variious threads
on this subject.

Macromedia could have easily prevented the port -- that they didn't
means a lot.

--- comes the revolution...

Background
=====================

When I first realized that a port was possible, I planned to just
publish a terse step-by-step procedure and publish it on CF-Talk -- no
big deal, one experienced CF developer explaining a technique to other
experienced CF developers.

I had been spending a lot of time at the O'Reilly sites, learning OS X
and installing things like PHP, MySQL, etc. I decided that that the
CFMX port should be published here so it could reach a larger audience.

I presented the idea, and port checklist, to Derrick Story (Editor of
the O'Reilly Web Sites and) an advocate of the Mac OS X platform.
Derrick thought it was a great idea, and said they would publish on 2
of the O'Reilly sites:

     Mac Development Center

     Web Development Center

The one thing Derrick wanted me to do was expand the approach so the
article would appeal to much broader audience, including those who:

     didn't know anything about ColdFusion

knew ColdFusion but rejected the Mac platform because CF was not
available on the Mac

knew the Mac but rejected ColdFusion, for the same reason.

What I had proposed as a single article became a 4-part series -- the
actual port being part 3.

The first 2 parts were designed to attract those (above) who, for
whatever reason, had rejected (or not considered) ColdFusion and the
Mac together.

It was a lot of extra work but the feedback told me that there was
interest, and the approach had opened (or focused) some eyes on the
potential of CFMX and Mac OS X.

The professional Developers (CF and non-CF) lambasted me "Where is part
3", "Get to the point", "Why are you dragging this out".

But they were more than offset by the "Yes, finally", "I didn't know
this was possible", "Now I can be on a par...", "I was wondering if
this was possible" feedback.

I think Derrick's approach was the right one, and there is a lot of
interest in the Mac-CF combination that would not be there if we had
just published a checklist for professional developers.
