4 decimal places isn't enough.  Here in this California county sales tax is .07875.

To store the tax value I use a decimal field.  Since the final amt due is always 
calc'd on total taxable amount of sale, not individual items, and rounded to the 
nearest cent the tax rate doesn't change storage requirements.
