Yes, we do see Macromedia people here, and they are invariably very helpful.
Strangely not about installation issues though.

You might recall I posted about 50 messages here a few months ago trying to
install CFMX on my dev server, and I got lots of suggestions, but none from
Macromedia. This is a wonderful community of helpful people. It's a major
asset to the ColdFusion development community.

My problem turned out that CFMX wouldn't install the jrun properly. Chris
Kief helped me for several hours but the problem eluded him. Dave Watts
most generously spent about seven hours working on my machine to no avail.
I wouldn't describe either Chris or Dave as a novices.

I had to reformat that hard drive again recently and installed windows, all
the updates, then tried to install CFMX. It wouldn't install. It didn't
give any messages. Just went through the wizard and then gave a blank page
instead of the administrator login page. The only way I could get it to
install was to reformat again, start again from the beginning, and install
CFMX before I did any updates or anything else.

It's my opinion that a half-decent install routine should either install
under most of the circumstances it's likely to meet (and I'd suggest meeting
a WinXPPRo system with one or two updates on it would qualify) or give
reasons why it failed - a hint or two as to what went wrong.

I believe a half-decent server system ought to install updaters on a
properly configured Win2k server with all the updates added, or give reasons
why it doesn't, so the Sysadmin can figure out what went wrong. Specially as
in my case a Sysadmin for whom ColdFusion isn't his first language.

If it doesn't do all these things, there should be technical notes somewhere
moderately easy to find on the Macromedia site that explain the problems and
what to do about it.

Can anyone tell me where to find a discussion on the MM site about how to
debug a updater installation that doesn't happen properly? (no error message
to refer to because none is given).

Can anyone point me to a MM tech note that explains how to install a JRUN
that isn't installed properly on a brand new drive?

It's interesting; we have installed many copies of CF50 and CFMX and had
virtually no problems. I do think Macromedia gives us good attention and
facility, for instance I am on 2 Websphere lists and I see no great evidence
of IBM personnel jumping in to constantly help users, we always see Sean
Corfield and often others from Macromedia here (Mike Chambers et al). And
of course thanks to Michael and Judith Dinowitz this and other great lists.

I don't know the release date, but I would suggest you not hold your breath
on
fixes for configuration issues. This myriad of problems has never seemed to
be
very high on MM's radar screen.

They remain the only major software publisher that refuses to adequately
develop
the install scripts which will make the required configuration settings as
part
of the setup. It remains a PITA to install their software (especially
server
software) and still have to research all over the place and then directly
edit
the registry, and a myriad of config files in order to get a useable
installation. All this and their withdrawal from free support for
installation
issues is going to bite them, I believe.

| Hello!
|
| Has there already been set a deadline when the new version of ColdFusion
| will be relased? Will there be any important changes (except the very
| important bug fixes for several bugs and configuration issues)?
|
| What JVM will be the default one?
|
| Best regards,
