Mine have worked pretty well. The only problem I've had is with Outlook
and the blocking of images.  Obviously, this method is a great tool to
measure effectiveness and it's been used in the past by some irreputable
people (SPAMers) to find valid email addresses so we can all find out
that we can get a year's supply of Viagra for 29 cents.  It's just like
everything else out there...it can be used for good or evil, and the
problem is that the people with the power often cannot be trusted.

Just to chime in on this - this method works great - but don't most mail
clients now block these web bugs? I wouldn't count on it being too
effective.
