Flex supports both SOAP web services and Remoting so take ur pic!
As for php etc...yep, you can use it...actually you don't even need to
use web services if you don't want to. Traditional HTTP calls would also
work...

So you can use Flex, for example, with php, tomcat, .net or whatever
(including cfmx)?
Does it use web services only a la flash remoting ... I should RTFM :)
