Hi Chuck Portable? Or Embeddable? Postgre(30MB RAM space) and MySQL(50MB RAM space) may be Portable but Cloudscape(2MB RAM space), HSQLDB, etc are a good option for embeddable apps. And yes we're using PG for big apps and MySQL for smaller... PG is very very nice...
