I had to ask about this same topic not so long ago.  Your problem is
rooted in your use of cfhttp, which is incorrect if you are trying to
retrieve an image.  Here's a working statement:

<cfhttp
        url="#theirServer.theirURL#"
        getasbinary="yes"
        path="#myServer.myFullPath#"
        file="#the.fileName#.gif">
