Are aliases something that are necessary to send and receive email through an SMTP server on behalf of site visitors and your clients if you don't host their POP accounts?
I know there's some key aspect of this whole scenario that I'm missing...and I just can't put all the pieces together... I didn't have this problem when I used my ISP mail servers to send and receive email like this (but I think at that time they may have been open relays), but I bumped into their 600 mails per day limit on accounts and needed to run my own server to by-pass that limit. We've been running SmarterMail (albeit a pretty old version.. I think 1.0 or 2.0, and I was pretty disappointed in it. Now I'm sure the newer version are better, but the old version we had was really slowing down our server, and had a weird way of handling aliases.
