I have used FBSD and Linux boxes for mail servers in the past when hosting sites. Now days I just use the SMTP in IIS because I maybe need to send 5 emails out a day, if even that since it is a development environment. If you do not know Linux already then it might very well be cheaper to just spend the $200 on a Windows software solution since time is money and you would need to familarize yourself with multiple things going that route.
If you have an old box laying around you could use it for a FBSD or Linux mail server. I just recently pulled the plug on a PPro 180mhz box that had been getting used as a DNS and email server for over 6 years.
