Well according to a quick (iterative) test on CF 8.0.1 evaluate seems to be about 5 times slower than the array notation. Of course, we're still talking about the difference between 1 ms and 5 ms's.
I think that is very good information to know and use, but frankly I would agree that readability should take precedence until you run into a page doing enough processing to actually matter.
