To clarify a bit on Adrian's suggestion, allow the other applications to access
the database of the core management application. One suggestion is to create a
read-only datasource to that database and use that new DSN when accessing from
the 'other' applications.

Example:
adminSource: datasource with full INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE access, used by core
app
adminReader: datasource with SELECT / proc access ONLY, used by other apps
