   I see nobody gave a simple example.. here is one:

Try submitting it first with nothing entered, then with something in 
one of the fields
I am not great with javascript or jquery but it works:)
I stripped out everything unneeded.
You can also easily do it without jquery just using javascript... but 
the jquery syntax is easier to remember.
