Verity will search databases as well as word/excel/pdf/text documents.  You
can set up multiple Verity indexes for each little DB app.  In the CF
search page, you can specify multiple collections to search against.  On
your search form, you could even give people the option to specify what
collections to search against

The CF docs within studio have some examples.  You may want to check the
archives as I know this has been talked about before.
