I use AuthorizeNet, a real-time payment processor. I opted for this route
after doing a simple cost analysis between using a real-time processor vs
having to buy/rent the software or card swipe terminal. I figured it would
take me about three years to reach the break-even point (I was looking at
purchasing the software at roughly $350 vs the payment processor setup cost
plus monthly gateway fee to use the service). One advantage of using a
real-time payment processor is they offer the same features through a
"virtual terminal" as the software (e.g., capture payments, issue credits,
enter phone orders manually, etc.) and I wouldn't need to worry about
hassling with software updates on my machine. Also, I don't need to worry
about storing credit card numbers and the added security that entails.
