We have had this exact problem - and suffered for months over it.
The problem in our case was that had not locked the application or session
variables properly. When they are being written they require exclusive locks
and when they are being read they require read-only locks.
We think that what was happenning was if there were users on both sites and
they performed an action simultaneously the session/application data would
become corrupted hence resulting in the error - and many other strange
results...
