I'm taking a Java course currently; the teacher stated that Java has
something like 80% of the server programming market at present. If this is
true, MS is going to have a very tough time penetrating the Java's inroads.

Also, with Java's RMI, having different OSs on the backend finally seems to
be less of an issue. So, why bother to convert to MS when something like
this is available?

I think that Microsoft has come to the (correct) conclusion that Windows is
not going to be considered the ideal platform for Java servers. Even if it
were, Microsoft can't provide Java functionality that is Windows-specific,
so there's no incentive for Microsoft to do anything with Java - after all,
for Microsoft as for Sun, development tools are primarily drivers for OS
(and in Sun's case, hardware) sales, rather than being independent products
in their own right.

Since .NET is still in beta, it's hard to say how successful it will be. My
guess is that .NET will be very popular for people currently developing on
Windows (like ASP and VB are now) and Java will remain popular on other
platforms.

I wouldn't worry too much about that yet. Microsoft doesn't quite dominate
the server arena.
