You don't need CFMX to use flash as a replacement, there are tons of people
that use Flash with CF 5 now. Check it out, I myself haven't done it, but I
know it's possible.

... and as long as you have CFMX installed. And we're working on CF5 for
the foreseeable future. But thanks for the suggestion anyway.

Without seeing for myself what there is to do I couldn't really give a good
suggestion, thought I saw someone else suggested a flash app to do the same
thing. If I were you I would go this route, faster, and works throughout
every browser as long as they have the plugin which is usually installed on
every machine.

Thanks Robert. Where were you when I had to develop the apps??! <g.

Anyway, the app is for producing a whole lot of documents for a radio
station, including the day's playlist. There are about 5000 songs in the
station's database and the programmer has to select from these records and
insert them into the runsheet. This automatically produces the station log,
the dj's playlist, tells the dj which CDs to pull from the library, the
playlist on the web site, the royalty returns for APRA and the
communication back to the artists that the station is playing their material
etc. In other words, when the programmer points at a song and clicks, a
whole range of things are put in motion at the station.

The advantage of CFTREE is that the whole library can be displayed as
artistname on the left of a screen, and when you click on the artist, it
displays all the songs in the library for that artist, and one click does
all the remaining jobs. I tried using a search screen or dropdown
selection controls and none of them worked - the drop down was FAR too long
(there are currently 513 artists in this database) and the search took just
too long. (The standard we have to meet is that 45 songs have to be
programmed in less than 30 minutes)

So ... If CFTREE isn't to be used, then what?

I'm open to suggestions. I wasn't happy on Friday night I can tell you, to
learn that this app suddenly didn't work after the station upgraded all
their browsers to IE6, and the programming for this week was not possible. I
have fudged a temporary solution for them but it's slower than the old one
and won't do for very long.

Any ideas as to how I can select QUICKLY songs from the 5000 (and growing)
database would be appreciated.

Cftree and the java apps alike have no worked reliably from day one, I
wouldn't use them if I were you. There are tons of html replacements that
will do near enough the same job and work 100% of the time across every
browser.

Late last week, I posted here that I had a problem that it seemed Macromedia
didn't want to know about, and I thought I'd give you an update.

The problem is that CFTREE (and I assume CFGRID) don't work with IE6 or
NN6.2 browsers. They'll display the tree but not pass the node values to
the form. So CFTREE applications appear to work at first sight, but when
you click "submit" on the form they're passing values to, you get an error.
This is apparently related to the versions of the java plugins and the
version used by CF5. (I have no idea if the problem is also in CFMX. I
don't use it yet.)

Well I posted here that I was disturbed that people had been complaining
here on this list and on the dev centre forums that this problem exists and
no one from Macromedia would acknowledge the problem existed and therefore
pay any attention to looking at a fix. Apparently the solution was to
rewrite all the applications to use some other technology. In other words a
"Tough sh*t" solution.

I got a reply from Neil Clark of Macromedia who said he'd make sure I was
told what's happening about this issue, and if there was nothing happening
about it, he'd see what he could do about getting it on someone's agenda.
There has been a brief exchange of suggestions which I'm in the process of
working through.

The point is, I wanted you all to know that thanks to Neil Clark, a
resolution to this issue is on the way.
