Mike Kear's dilemma with installing SQLSever 2005 would have been lessened, if he had a second machine to test it on. Obviously, having a spare machine may not be a luxury. However, there's always a virtual machine.
If you're not aware, VMWare are planning to freely release their next version of their GSX Virtual Server Product (http://www.vmware.com/products/server/). Currently in open beta, it's planned to be generally available around the middle of the year. The beauty of virtual machines is that once you create a virtual machine with your desired based OS and server configurations, you can save that and make copies play and test with. So if you end up screwing a particular VM, no worries, delete it and grab a new copy and start again. Of course VMWare is not the only virtual machine software, there's M$ VirtualPC, SwSoft (http:/sw-soft.com), Xen (http://www.xensource.com) (free) and Q (http:http://www.kberg.ch/q/) (runs on Mac OSX host and is free). I'm partial VMWare because it has a scaleability path to their ESX Server and Clustering tools. VMWare will run on a regular Windows or Linux Host and can run any Linux or Wndows guest OS. Whereas ESX comes with it's own specially built high performance Host OS (built around Linux). One really neat thing with ESX is you can have 2 or more physical machines in a cluster and be able to move a VM from one physical machine to another while its still running and serving requests. Zero downtime to reorganise your network of virtual machines. Think they're even planning (or have already) a tool to automatically move VM's to automatically balance the load on all the physical machines in the cluster.
