I don't agree at all. Using a hosting provider comes with sacrifices.

You can't expect to be able to do everything you like. I'm not sure this is
a MS problem, but rather a choice of yours. If you have really specific
needs, then it's time to organise your own servers.

Let the servers set you free.

Mike,

Totally agree, and is why I would like to see it included in a patch / SP /
new version.

But I am also very interested in what other information you come across as
well.

I appreciate the efforts you've gone to this far, Scott. It's further
than anyone else i've asked about this has gone. Now i figure I know
why no one else help me out - ... the product managers who figured
out the feature set for this product forgot completely the needs of
people with remote databases. There IS no feature like DTS any
more. SSIS is totally broken so that means Microsoft have really
dropped the ball for the million or so (just a wild guess) site owners
who have databases on remote servers.

Truth is, the hosting companies can't possibly give higher privileges
than they do. Imagine the chaos if a hundred people had server admin
rights to a server! Not to mention the security issues! Shudder!!

Can you give me the name (off list if you like) and email address of
someone in Mcrosoft whose job it would be to s how me (and by
implication all the others on this list and elsewhere who have shared
hosting) how to do this (if such a capability exists)? Once i know
how to do it I'd be more than happy to put a full step-by-step on my
company's site for all to see.

Cheers
