Well the "maintenance" in this context is to just handle all those
little jobs that are irritants but the client needs doing - fix a
spelling mistake, correct an alignment issue, add a column to a page
view, change the product catalogue to allow images at a higher level
than currently. all those jobs that are 30 minutes here, an hour
there, 5 minutes or ten minutes there. The idea is I have to
account for all that time, invoice it supply timesheets, the client
has to check it. Each month the dollar value will change depending
on what work i actually do.

On the other hand, the client wants a known amount each month, at
least as far as all those little jobs are concerned, and wants to put
me on a fixed amount per month. Some months he'll lose out, other
months I will, but over a year we'll both work out ok. Development
tasks - new features would be considered 'projects' and not included
in teh monthly maintenance fee.

That's the theory.

I'm happy to embark on such a scheme - it's got benefits for me as
well as the client, as long as we dont get into a punch up over
whether a task is included in the monthly fee or not.

I felt sure it wouldnt be a revolutionary scheme - that there would be
others on such a scheme, and might share their definition of what they
consider to be those maintenance tasks and what would be maintenance.

I think there are clear-cut cases that are no problem defining - fix a
spelling mistake is maintenance. Reskin the site or add completely
new functionality is development. It's the areas near the dividing
line that will end up being contentious. Thats what i was hoping to
be able to define so it minimises the chances of conflict about it.
