I think that's probably the point. What's fun for people who work with 
and/or are interested in computers is generally nothing but a confusing 
pain in the ass for those who have no interest other than achieving some 
goal, like booking a flight or checking their email. More often than 
not, people don't want to customize things and don't want to be 
bombarded with options - it's the job of a UI designer to use their 
experience and training to make decisions and IMO, Google have done a 
pretty good job here.
