The files were in a zip emailed by the client... and although I don't know what someone would be doing opening the files in Word I tried it anyway.. they look the same. Word asked me what encoding I wanted to open it with (that was my other guess, that the charset was Chinese or something) but none of the options Word gave me made it intelligible.
