A PDF is required to get the book printed. If when the book is completed and someone wishes to work the PDF to work nicely I don't see a problem offering that as a download. Of course it would cost the same as the book would to compensate the authors, etc.

However, I must point out the potential usefullness of a PDF document. I too prefer to have a book sitting next to me - however, a book doesn't have search box on it and I must rely on the index or table of contents. PDFs allow for searching - so, as I may not use the PDF normally...I would/could use it for text searches. I think if this should take off - we offer both a printed book version and PDF. Also, when errata is found - updates to the book can happen - changes to code examples - wording - etc. Couldn't you just format the PDF for 8.5 x 11 paper and urge people to print it (maybe suggest using a nifty odd/even - so you could print both sides... ;-). I have a laser printer - so I'm not complaining....I would be if I was still using a crappy inkjet. Even if you have a crappy printer, your local kinko's can easily run off something for you and bind it in a GBC type plastic comb binder. $10 plus postage would be something like $13-14 bucks at least. Your local kinko's should be able to do the same for about the same - AND - nobody who produces the book has to printing them up, package them, drive to the post office and sent them. And more importantly, get people's money - which indoubtly will have some problems.
