All this means is that a mailer has to have a subscribed address in the From
header. Presumably, anyone can do that without actually being subscribed.
I'll wager that I could write a CF page that used your gmail address as the
FROM, and that your list would accept it.

To block this kind of stuff, you'd need to put the typical spam filter,
greylist/blacklist functionality in front of your list server, or moderate
the list.
