Not even an option for a lot of users – many of us have email clients dictated by our departments.

I think the best solution is to stop complaining and use Thunderbird or Evolution for email.
I would not even have noticed that I receive spam from the list if people would not have started to complain about it.
It just goes to the junk folder (that I check from time to time).
