Yes depending on which versioning software you use it can be that easy
or easier. We use Perforce and the plug in for eclipse makes life a
breeze. (Thanks to Jared Rypka Hauer for finding that while he was here)

Yes. I do exactly that. I happen to use FTP instead of RDS, but same
principle. Check out the "file explorer" there are blog entries on the
somewhere.
