Thanks for the response, Graham. I poked around and found that you are
exactly right. Nabble works just fine with thread. To my surprise, the
problem is Gmail, which breaks threads whenever the Subject line
changes, regardless of the In-Reply-To header. I understand why Google
did this, but it was an unfortunate decision in my opinion, and it
makes it harder to have mailing lists and forum-list gateways
simultaneously.

Given that this behavior is apparently relatively widespread (e.g.
Apple Mail), I propose going with Sam's suggestion as general
etiquette for this list and not changing the Subject line of the
message unless you're forking the thread.
