Thanks for the screen shot. Curious. We see instances of the sidebar greying out, only temporarily (eg attachment <https://bugzilla.osafoundation.org/attachment.cgi?id=5397> to <https://bugzilla.osafoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3228>) but AFAIK the near-entire greyness is a new one.
If you're still bugged by this issue, you might begin with the section 'Chandler quits on launch or won't start' at <http://chandlerproject.org/Projects/TroubleshootChandler>. Using Mac OS X, alt key is your friend whilst starting Chandler in such situations. Let us know how you get on.
