It takes years to roll out something to where the equipment and availability is widespread. And even then, you still have to purchase an account for it.
Everybody and their dog has 802.11b or 802.11g already installed in their laptop[1]. And even grandmothers know how to set it up and use it. Right now, at this very moment. And you don't have buy a service plan to use it. Drive to nearest coffee shop, done. To me, the free wireless net thing and the "air card" thing are two different solutions to two different scenarios. I have an air card for when I absolutely need connectivity and I absolutely can't get to a coffee shop :) [1] Yes, many dogs have laptops now.
