Lots of good ideas here Joe, Similar to your ideas on the dictionary questions, I had thought that one of the enhancements that could be made to labs would be to allow annotations so that you could personalize the lab as you work through it - and share this later if you wish. This reflective work tends to move the learning into the domain of emergence which encourages the deepest and most permanent forms of learning [1]. It is neat to see that depending on the domain that you work in will affect the way the information is retained by the learner.
