I get paid to program and to solve problems, so I find myself working in a variety of languages, depending on what I am doing and who I am working with.
I do not feel any obligation whatsoever to use J, but I often find myself reaching for it. I have sometimes translated stuff I have written in J into other languages, with varying degrees of success (the result is always bulkier, sometimes faster for the purpose, sometimes slower). Quite often my work does not involve coding at all but instead involves working with data, or with people. (But sometimes it does involve coding.) And, if a few lines of J can replace a few dozen lines of code in some The hardest part of solving most of the problems I deal with is figuring out what a solution looks like - what should be done differently and what should remain unchanged. I can't say I always get that right, either. But all of this means that I don't think it's reasonable for me to even attempt to break out what fraction of my time or work matches up to what specific technology. If I did, I would probably try to construct something like a venn diagram and it would vary from week to week, month to month and so on. I can say that having a good understanding of J has often helped me to better understand problems and reason about them, regardless of the target language. Also... there are some things that I wish were improved in J, but the biggest problems I have with J are really problems with the environments it runs in. And my only solution there is to try and better understand things so that I can [hopefully] eventually work through my issues. Does any of this help you?
